The Midway is a contemporary pub and restaurant serving home cooked food. The menu is extensive for lunch time and evening meals and Sunday’s see’s the addition of traditional roast dinners.
We went on a Saturday afternoon for a light lunch as we had heard very good things about the food. Surprisingly we found the Midway to be quiet when we arrived, a quiet pub on a Saturday lunchtime is not often a good sign, so we were a little tentative.
We were greeted by a waitress and asked if we wanted to dine in the pub or the restaurant area; the restaurant area was empty so we chose to sit in the pub area where there was one other couple. Drinks orders were taken and we were handed the menu. Between being given the menu and choosing our meals countless number of people arrived which was somewhat of a relief, and before too long the place was quite busy. This made us feel much more positive about the food.
I ordered a minute steak sandwich, whilst the Mrs ordered a fish finger sandwich, the menu described the fish finger sandwich as freshly battered fish goujons on a thick sliced bloomer served with tartare sauce or tomato ketchup. Either these were very large goujons cut ion half or the chef had sliced up a battered cod to put on the sandwich. Not that it took anything away from the taste, it was very nice, soft flaky fish in a crisp batter, just as you would expect.
The steak sandwich wasn’t quite as nice as the fish finger sandwich, the steak was just a little too chewy and a little too small at £7.75. Neither sandwich came with accompaniments, side dishes are additional, we ordered a portion of chunky chips to share for £1.95.
Overall we were generally pleased with the Midway for a quick, light lunch. A repeat visit to the restaurant would be worthwhile to give some of the main meals a try, I particularly like the sound of the surf n’ turf and the steak and chicken combo.
The Midway is a nice pub, the staff are nice and friendly and the food, although not outstanding was good. The total bill for two sandwiches, a side of chips and two large soft drinks was approximately £23. Quite Reasonable.
